Monday, Aug 30, 2021 to Friday, Sep 3, 2021

Add to Calendar

Organizers:

Philippe Rigollet (MIT; chair), Katy Craig (UC Santa Barbara), Simone Di Marino (Università di Genova), Nisheeth Vishnoi (Yale University), Martin Wainwright (UC Berkeley), Ashia Wilson (MIT)

The boot camp is intended to acquaint participants with the key themes of the program and, by means of tutorials, rapidly bring them to similar levels of knowledge regarding both mathematical tools and applications. The tutorials will be split into two types. On the one hand, fundamental tutorials aim at covering the main tools, techniques, and problems in the field. On the other hand, advanced tutorials aim to present more specialized topics that have recently emerged in the field. Fundamental tutorials will be held in the morning in two lectures of 1.5 hours each. Advanced tutorials will last 1.5 hours each and be held in the afternoon.

The boot camp is arranged over five days:

  • Day 1: Optimization
  • Day 2: Sampling
  • Day 3: Optimal Transport
  • Day 4: PDEs
  • Day 5: Algebraic Methods

Speakers: Ashia Wilson (MIT), Andreas Eberle (University of Bonn), Mikaela Iacobelli (ETH Zurich), Katy Craig (UC Santa Barbara), Avi Wigderson (Institute for Advanced Study), Michael Walter (University of Amsterdam), Suvrit Sra (MIT), Maxim Raginsky (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), Marco Cuturi (Google Brain), José Antonio Carrillo (University of Oxford), Jonathan Leake (TU Berlin), Nicolas Boumal (EPFL), Nisheeth Vishnoi (Yale University), Jan Maas (IST Austria), Dejan Slepčev (Carnegie Mellon University)

This event will be held in person and virtually.

If you require accommodation for communication, please contact our access coordinator at simonsevents [at] berkeley.edu with as much advance notice as possible.

The boot camp is partially supported by the Foundations of Data Science Institute. We gratefully acknowledge the support of the NSF through grant DMS-2023505.

All event participants are subject to the Code of Conduct described here.

If you are interested in joining this boot camp, please see the Participate page.

Registration is required to attend this boot camp. Space may be limited, and you are advised to register early. To submit your name for consideration, please register and await confirmation of your acceptance before booking your travel.
