Propose a program: Proposals for programs are solicited from the worldwide theoretical CS community and may be submitted at any time; proposals are reviewed twice a year. Join a program: Senior researchers who would like to join one of our scheduled programs should contact the program organizers as early as possible. Please see the FAQ below for more information. Alternatively, researchers may apply to become long-term visitors. Junior researchers may also apply to become a Research Fellow at the Simons Institute.

 

Attend a workshop/boot camp: Everyone may register to participate in one of our free-standing workshops or in a workshop/boot camp attached to a particular program. A list of upcoming workshops/boot camps may be found here. Self-registration for workshops/boot camps generally becomes available approximately ten weeks in advance on the workshop's/boot camp's web page. Workshop/boot camp schedules are generally available approximately three weeks in advance of the event. Most workshop/boot camp talks are livestreamed on the workshop/boot camp schedule page and the Simons Institute YouTube channel, and available on those pages thereafter. We do not offer support for general public participants.

 

Attend a conference: The Institute periodically hosts major events, such as the IEEE Symposium on the Foundations of Computer Science (FOCS).

 

Attend lectures and seminars: The Institute hosts numerous lectures and seminars, including Richard M. Karp Distinguished Lectures intended for a broad scientific audience and specialist seminars associated with particular programs. These activities are open to the public. See our calendar for a list of all upcoming events at the Institute. You may sign up to receive email announcements for events associated with a current program on that program's web page.

 

• As described above, the Simons Institute invites qualified applicants to apply for a Research Fellowship in a program.
• Quantum Postdoctoral Researchers are one-year or two-year postdoctoral fellowship positions broadly in quantum computing, including quantum complexity theory and cryptography, quantum algorithms including quantum machine learning and quantum chemistry, and quantum information.
• Machine Learning Postdoctoral Researchers are fellowship positions under the National Science Foundation's (NSF) program on Transdisciplinary Research in Principles of Data Science to establish the Foundations of Data Science Institute (FODSI) or the NSF Collaboration on the Theoretical Foundations of Deep Learning program.

Frequently Asked Questions

+ What is the difference between a program, a boot camp, and a workshop?

A program is one-semester long gathering of about 40-50 invited long-term participants (a mix of senior and junior researchers) who spend at least one month (usually a semester) at the Institute. Programs are led by a small group of organizers who are recognized experts in their fields. A program usually includes three week-long workshops, each of which attracts an additional group of invited speakers and focuses on a different aspect of the program's scientific scope, as well as an initial "boot camp" designed to provide long-term participants with the same level of base knowledge.

+ How do I participate in a program?

Program participants are invited by program organizers. Additionally, researchers beyond their postdoctoral years may contact program organizers regarding participation by completing this inquiry form. Alternatively, researchers may apply to become long-term visitors. 

+ How do I participate in a boot camp and/or workshop?

Everyone is welcome to attend the boot camp and workshops that are part of the program. About ten weeks before each boot camp or workshop, registration will open on its web page. Registration is free. You may also want to sign up to receive announcements about registration opening and other events associated with the program using the sign-up link on the program page. Additionally, most boot camp and workshop talks are livestreamed on the boot camp/workshop schedule page.
