I review high energy physics approaches to optimized signal extraction and measurement, and hypothesis testing leading to discoveries at the LHC, as well as the challenges of distributing, processing and collaboratively analyzing exabytes of data at sites throughout the world, using current and next generation wide area networks. Recent approaches aimed at applying machine learning methods to both the physics discovery and global workflow problem domains also will be introduced.
