New Directions in Probabilistic Models of Evolution
Organizers:
Evolution is inherently stochastic and probabilistic models have played a central role in understanding evolution. As we learn more about the structure of genomes and the pattern of genetic variation within and between species, we need to develop new probabilistic models to describe the complex biological and historical processes that drive evolution. In particular, it is important to think about mathematically sound approximations that are computationally scalable while capturing the relevant degrees of freedom in evolutionary dynamics. The goal of this workshop is to help identify the key models, analyze their theoretical behavior, and discuss appropriate, efficient inference methods for those models. The mathematical and algorithmic ideas that are needed for the analysis of such models will draw from diverse areas, including combinatorics, coalescent theory, spatial diffusions, MCMC, graphical models, statistics, and statistical physics.
