Joe Warrington
Joe Warrington is a Senior Scientist in the Automatic Control Lab (IfA) at ETH Zurich. His research interests focus on robust and distributed optimization and market mechanism design, with the main application area being power and energy systems. In particular, he is interested in the use of real-time forecast data (e.g. high-dimensional weather forecasts) to determine optimal planned responses to forecast errors in power systems. He is also interested in operations research problems more generally, including optimal power flow and control of urban mobility systems.
His PhD is also from ETH Zurich (Dec 2013), carried out under the supervision of Manfred Morari. He is a holder of the national ABB Research Prize, which is awarded once every two years for an outstanding PhD thesis completed in the area of control and automation. He returned to ETH in December 2016 after working for two years as an energy consultant at Baringa Partners LLP in London. He earned BA and MEng degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Cambridge University (2008), after which he worked for a year as a control systems engineer for Wind Technologies, a startup in Cambridge, UK.
